The charges against Stone, who was born in Norwalk and grew up in Northern Westchester, were unsealed in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The grand jury indictment details allegations that the 66-year-old Stone was an intermediary between senior Trump campaign officials and WikiLeaks, which released hacked emails of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton of Chappaqua, and others involved in her campaign.

Stone is due to appear in court at 11 a.m. Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was taken into custody under darkness by FBI agents. The indictment was filed Thursday in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Stone, a 1970 graduate of John Jay High School in Cross River who grew up in Lewisboro, resigned as the top adviser to the Trump campaign in August 2015. He remained an informal adviser in the campaign, however, and “maintained regular contact with and publicly supported” it through the 2016 election, according to the indictment.

Amid the Mueller probe, Stone, a self-described dirty trickster and former Richard Nixon aide who has a tattoo of the 37th president on his back, has maintained his innocence although he had said he expected to be indicted.

Stone said in a December 2018 interview on ABC-TV that there is “no circumstance” under which he would testify against the president because he would “have to bear false witness against him."

“ 'I will never testify against Trump,' " Trump wrote in response on Twitter. "This statement was recently made by Roger Stone, essentially stating that he will not be forced by a rogue and out of control prosecutor to make up lies and stories about 'President Trump.' "
